English Literature is one of the study programs at UNY. In addition, English Literature is also one of the study programs with the most applicants each year. However, even so, there are still many people who do not know about the English Literature study program and what is learned as an English Literature student.
In this study program, we will study many things related to literature, linguistics, and translation in which later students can focus on one of these fields. This is called concentration. As already mentioned, in the English Literature study program at UNY, students can choose a concentration which is divided into literature, linguistics, and translation. This concentration will be chosen when students will enter the fifth semester. What will be learned from each of these concentrations? Let’s talk about it more!
Literature
As the name suggests, students who choose a literature concentration will be more involved with literary works than the other two concentrations. Students will gain experience to know more about British, American and American prose and poetry. Apart from that, European and American drama and theater will also be discussed further in this concentration. Students will also not only gain knowledge about this, but also be involved in producing a mini-performance of a drama written by a European or an American playwright. Then, to help students improve their writing, students are also trained to discuss criticism, the role of criticism, and especially literary criticism. The courses students who take literature concentration will get are:
Prose Analysis
Drama Analysis
Poetry Analysis
Literary Analysis
Stage Production
Linguistics
Unlike the concentration of literature, linguistics invites students to see the phenomena around them directly. For example, through sociolinguistics, students will gain knowledge regarding language functions in their own society and how to interpret them. Besides, they will also get to know basic concepts about psychological and verbal processes of the production and perception of language. Then, to deepen knowledge about linguistics itself, students will also be introduced to some prominent and influencing modern theories and schools of linguistics. Not only that, students who choose this concentration will also meet corpus linguistics which is a ‘something’ new for students of English literature. They will be introduced to a step-by-step guide to creating and analyzing linguistic corpora. Moreover, the last one, students will meet the range of research tools which are currently used in studies within the field of linguistics with discourse analysis. The courses students who take linguistics concentration will get are:
Theories and Schools of Linguistics
Sociolinguistics
Psycholinguistics
Corpus Linguistics
Discourse Analysis
Translations
The last concentration of English literature at UNY is translations. In this concentration, students are not only required to translate, but also how to interpret it. Then, the objects to be translated and interpreted are also not based solely on written texts. Students will also learn how to do bilingual translating which uses graphic or phonic channels of discourse-in-text. They will not only do manual translation and interpretation, but will also learn how to use softwares such as translation memory software, language search-engine software, terminology management software, and interactive machine translation. Furthermore, translation and interpretation are certainly not only carried out by students’ opinions because they will be done based on the theory of criticism and translation evaluation that students have learned this semester. The courses students who take linguistics concentration will get are:
Translating Practice
Interpreting Practice
Audiovisual Translation
Translation Criticism and Evaluation
Computer-Assisted Translation
